In 2023 Danish banks registered more than 9.127 cases on mobile bank fraud. That is double as many cases as the year before. In more than half the cases the banks managed to stop the transfer of money to criminals but the amount stolen in 2023 still amounted to 104,9 mio. DKR. And fraud can happen to everyone!
In app. 15% of the cases the victims were under 26 years. The figures show that young people are particularly vulnerable fraud related to private trade – for example, used selling of used clothes and bags, prepayments for student housing and on platforms like Airbnb, plus of various forms of smishing. These can e.g. be text messages from alleged parcel companies that turn out to be fake. And like other groups, young people are also exposed to various types of payment card fraud.
There are no easy solutions, but for this Nordic Fintech Trends we will hear from experts who might be able to provide some suggestions for how to prevent fraud towards teenagers and young adults from happening in the first place and what could be done to decrease cases in the future.
