CODeM: Challenges and Opportunities of Defi Models
What is the project about?
Background
DeFi models or Decentralized Finance models is an umbrella term for peer-to-peer financial services on public blockchains. Decentralized finance models thus offers financial instruments without relying on intermediaries such as brokerages, exchanges, or banks by using smart contracts on a blockchain, mainly Ethereum.
The researchers behind this project have been successful in disseminating research on DeFi models in the international research community with several impactful papers (100+ citations so far), but the technical and scientific description of their work poses a barrier for the industrial Fintech community.
The CODeM Project
The CODeM has three main goals:
Goal 1: Perform knowledge dissemination and transfer to the Fintech sector
While the researchers behind this project have been successful in disseminating their research on DeFi models in the international research community with several impactful papers (100+ citations so far), they have identified a challenge when it comes to distilling the main results of their research and to communicate in a way that is accessible to all relevant actors in the Fintech sector.
Goal 2: Identify research and innovation gaps w.r.t the needs of the Fintech sector
Once knowledge has been made accessible to Fintech companies, the researchers aim to identify the innovation potential of their research on DeFi models and of the corresponding proof-of-concept methodologies and tools, and the main gaps and challenges. Key questions which they will attempt to answer are:
Are the DeFi applications they have considered (lending pools, AMMs) relevant or should they look at other applications?
- What challenges does the applications to be considered pose, in particular regarding sustainability goals and financial regulations? Can the models developed so far be adapted to those needs?
- Do the proof-of-concept tools that they have developed for simulation-based analysis and predictions of DeFi applications have potential use in the Fintech market?
Goal 3: Explore innovation possibilities to address those gaps.
The aim is to single out the most promising research and innovation actions that can be taken to close the identified gaps and to describe a roadmap for implementing them. The identification of concrete research and innovation project proposal is an expected outcome.
Project activities
To support the goals of the project the researchers will organise a number of activities including:
- 2 company seminars where companies can become familiar with the existing research and knowledge base on DeFi Models
- One-to-one dialogue follow-up meetings with companies based on initial seminar
- Research on state-of-the-art solutions and identification of knowlegde gaps and fintech challenges and innovation needs (New Roadmap)
